Our final destination was the cemetery/dump.
-
The cemetery is located right next to the dump. Thousands of families live in the dump. They have built there homes from their findings and they make their meals from other peoples refuse. Their clothes are scavenged from the piles and they sell what they can in order to make a meager living.
-
When we pulled into the cemetery (where people also live), we looked around for a few minutes. There are crypts that belong to the wealthy (which is a relative term here), but the majority of the huge cemetery is filled with walls and walls of tombs.
-
Immediately, you notice where a casket has been removed from the wall...a gaping hole in the midst of the markers. You see, you have to rent your space in the wall. This debt is passed down from generation to generation. After awhile, when you are paying for grandparents, parents, uncles, aunts, etc, it becomes too much.
-
When that happens, and you fail to pay for one of your family members, their tomb is opened. Their casket is pulled from it's enclosure and opened. The bones are buried in a mass grave in the dump...which is conveniently located just over the wall, and their casket is tossed over as well.
